Cutting old mig gas bottles.

I have two empty old mig gas bottles I need to cut in to for making a few things. I no mig gas is not combustible. Just like to ask if there is anything I should be aware of before cutting. Just like to be safe than sorry.

If the valves are left open there shouldn't be an issue. As long as you're sure it was mig gas and don't owe rental!

Yes one for mig and other was tig. Now both empty. Have had them sitting in my workshop for a year. And now found a use for them. Just don't like cutting in to metal bottles that had compress gas in them.

Just make damn sure they are empty and the valve isn't blocked, particularly if it's a high pressure one.

I've cut big oxygen bottles up - open the valve to make sure it's empty, smash the valve off for the brass, then put the bottles into the bandsaw and cut them.
Just don't do it with acetylene cylinders

I cut open a propane gas bottle years ago. It sat outside with the valve open.was empty.filled it with water.it sat for a couple of days.then went to cut it. It @@@@ the life out of me with a bang. Since then been very weary of cutting in to them.

I think they still hold some pressure even when nothing more comes out of the valve.
This is probably so the bottle dosen't have to be purged when refilled.
The one high pressure bottle i cut, i was lucky that i unscrewed the whole valve a bit and it continued emptying for an hour or so.

I have a couple of big propane bottles. They are z handy size in diameter for lots of things. It's just risky.

The dodgy one i cut was an oxy. The propane are a bit more straight forward

They'd need a built in regulator to do that!

Done loads. In fact did 7 50l my helium cylinders earlier this year along with 2 o2 ones. Just take valve out and chop up

I cut up everything except acetylene (for obvious reasons)... never had a single pop out of any bottle in over 15 years. I do leave the propane ones open all the time though so they have plenty of venting time.

Just a residual pressure valve. Along with non return valves they're not uncommon http://www.bcga.co.uk/pages/index.cfm?page_id=98, as said it's to prevent contamination when people leave "empties" with the valve open. I've got a vague recollection Backpurge has mentioned that BOC cylinders (or at least some of them?) have residual pressure valves but obviously they almost certainly belong to BOC no matter how they were aquired so no one's gonna cut them up...

I'm always surprised people don;t use big old propane bottles for extra air capacity with their compressors

I was going to use a couple but then bought a 1500litre tank on ebay very cheap so stuck with that instead
