I need to cut a piece of cast iron to size and then drill holes in it, or vice versa, I was going to use an angle grinder then a cobalt drill bit, would this be the best way to do or is there a better way?
Cast iron is realitively easy to cut you could use a saw with fine pitch teeth, normal high speed steel drills easily cope with most cast irons, if you do use an angle grinder make sure you are wearing eye protection, and be wary of the amount and direction of the sparks produced, you could set things on fire.
depends on the cast iron. most cast iron can be drilled with normal HSS drills as long as they are sharp. if you're unlucky though, you might have to drill through a chilled spot (which will be harder than normal cast iron), in which case you may need a cobalt drill.
Thanks for your help both, most appreciated. I'm going to use a cobalt drill bit because I have stacks of them left over from drilling some stainless steel
