Cutting Box Section (quickly)

I have one of the clarke horizontal band saws which works fine for cutting anything, but I now have a large amount of box section (40x40x3) to cut for a project, 90 and 45 degrees.

Just wondering is there anything that is quicker than the bandsaw but still fairly accurate.

I can get it profiled from the supplier but they are looking a clean fortune so if I could buy something with the difference I could buy full lengths and profile it myself and have another tool for the same money

cold saw would proberly be the best, but finding a good one at a good price is the hard part.

then you have cut off saws that can cut metal, wood, plastic etc.
or the smaller chop saws.

i used to use bandsaw to cut 50x50 box, but found it wouldn't cut dead straight.

then one day while walking around makro i spotted a evolution rage 2 cut off saw.
reduced down twice to get rid off the last one.

got a right bargain

Metal chop saw Stevie. Fast and reliably straight providing a) you don't overwork it and b) you take the time to set it up nice and straight. The problem with them is they're noisy, stinky and did I mention they're loud?

A cold cut saw is an excellent choice but not as fast a chop saw. Like Stuart says, pretty pricey.

I have one of the Aldi type cut off saws, uses the 300mm (I think) abrasive discs, cuts fast, accurate enough for me and the discs last longer than I expected.

Considering they are usually only around the £40 mark when Aldi and Lidl's have them in stock they are a bargain.

its only 110V so would need a transformer...i am looking for abrasive as i dont like the TCT blades really...i have a rage mitre saw that has a TCT blade on it and it didnt last too long on 20mm solid bar

ok...i find 110V tools gutless and a pita to use when you get everything to where you are working and realise you have forgotten your transformer...plus its not abrasive.

i sold my 110V transformer after getting fed up with the 110v 230mm grinder i had that bogged down with every cut when any sort of pressure was applied...

Evolution rage sliding mitre saw. They have a shop on ebay where they sell off refurbished machines. iiro £60 delivered for a grade b 210mm sliding mitre saw. clean cut. very few sparks, but noisy.

+1 for a a Rage chop saw, but to add to eSCHEn's list of downsides there is the fact that they spray red hot, razor sharp metal shards down on your head and neck. I wear a full face mask and a woolly hat when I use mine

just look out with that hat seen more than one burst into flames. I wouldn't allow one in the shop just wear a welders cap or canvass type ball cap.
Its seriously unfunny if its your head on fire

I can only give you a tip. Cut them all square(adding a tad for each mitre). then do all the mitres

why? that just seems like a waste of material...ive never had a problem cutting mitres on my rage saw, measure twice cut once etc...

Why the hell would you want an abrasive one?????? Unless you're making exhausts, in which case you definitely don't want a TCT one.

Your grinder didn't work properly because your transformer was too small for the 20A load the 2.2kw grinder needed... I have a 2.2kw TCT 110v chopsaw, it NEVER bogs down because I have the correct transformer. Besides, 110v gear is cheaper second hand.

I think we are in a general agreement that a chop saw is the way forward. I suppose you can guess what my next question is, Which is the best one to go for? And what are the best discs/blades to use?

I have a Transformer so no bother using 110v
