Cutting 3mm ali treadplate

Anyone do this much without a guillotine? Not got plasma want a nice cut suitable for corner to corner welded in a reasonable time for the cutting with reasonable quantity for a job measured on site.
I was actually thinking of trying a circular saw with a guide clamped firmly down over three tresstles or is that just crazy?

I've seen a guy cutting ally plate on a bench circular saw,but he did change the blade for a metal cutting one,so if you change the blade cannot see a problem but bearing in mind the motor might not take it? and it could be a struggle?

i have always used my angle grinder with alloy cutting discs...with a guide..get nice cuts ..done loads of it on my dads tanker...

It cuts easy enough with a jigsaw and a coarse blade, turn the sheet over and mark and it cut it from the back.

i have done this many times with a hand held circular saw

you have to work from bottom of sheet, use an aluminium blade with a negative hook angle. http://www.justsawblades.com/systimatic/terminology.htm
as mentioned above you can also use a table saw (again with the negative hook blade) or a jigsaw.

Jigsaw with some lube. Make sure it's an upstroke blade

Jigsaws,hmmm! from what i can make out the ally is pretty longish? with him saying doing it on three trestles,jigsaw will take forever and a day to get there and as far as I remember even the best jiggys don't always give straight cut despite using a guide.

I cut lots of ply with jigsaw and agree, the circ. saw that brian and paul talk of was what I was thinking as that can cut very straight

Hello Kent,

I regularly use my portable and table saw (just a cheapo fox saw) to cut aluminium with just the standard tungsten tipped blades, no lubricant or anything. Eye protection is a must as the chips fly everywhere.

I use a small hand held circular saw from Aldi for cutting sheet steel ranging from 0.8 to 2.5mm thick, looks like they are on sale again next weekend.

I have done 3mm with my band saw. Although I did keep a blade specially for it (having said that my wood blade was not that sharp lol )

I use a little circular saw. It's noisy as hell but works a treat; My bandsaw, with a wood blade, goes through it like it's not there, but how often is a bandsaw OK to cut sheet.

I've cut 20mm ally on my cross slide wood saw,changed the blade for a metal cut blade.

I did put crash helmet and fire proof gloves on though when I started cutting it.
