Cut 40

Hi all this is my first time on your forum and am hoping someone can give me some advice, i have just got a Cut 40 plasma cutter off the internet i have never used one before so i just got a cheap one to try out for DIY use
I have set it up but do not seem to be able to get it to work i have changed all the settings checked all connections but no joy, it lights up the relay kicks in and the fan spins but all i get is a few light sparks when i put the torch relay close to the metal any ideas would be most appreciated

Does it have an external intake for compressed air and if so what sort of pressure are you running it at??

Hi yes it has and it is set at about 35 psi or 0.2 kpa

They're similar to the MTC-120 I've got but without the MMA or TIG...
Need a good supply of compressed air, preferably dry, at about 100 Psi.

Try ramping the pressure up to as near 1 MPa as you can get it...

Edit: Mine usually runs quite well at 0.4 to 0.6 MPa but I've got to turn the current up to a minimum half way and slowly run it up from there...

Hi just tried it at full pressure just under 1 mpa still nothing

Just had a look and think this is a scratch start, not HF.
Try it on about 30A and just brush the nozzle against the work piece, make sure the earth clamps got a good grip too, a little loose sometimes...

Edit: Chinese aren't too good at translating sometimes...

Hi tried that still no joy, according to spec it should be a HF start so ive got intouch with supplier and told him i am sending it back and he said he will send me another one out

Cool, pity though... I've heard a lot of bad info on some of the Chinese makes but the supplier I picked was good...

Nice of them to replace it for you, some don't or fob you off...

Hi all i have recieved a replacement today, pluged it in started to cut so i turned it off to get some gloves and mask, tried to cut and nothing, have tried everything but still no joy all it would do is spark like a spark plug on a car when you put the torch about 3mm of the metal any ideas?

Try getting the nozzle really close and turn it right up on current to start with then turn it down, check the earth clamp too and that the compressed air is flowing through the nozzle clearly when you press the button...

Hi,

try setting it to maximum power and then try various air-settings from minimum to maximum.

I believe that if the air-flow is too high for the current then it can blow the 'arc' out before it starts.

On my 40 amp cutter I generally use 20A @ 2 bar, 30A @ 3 bar and 40A @4 bar...

but other machines may have different characteristics.
