Customs/hidden charges for items from Australia?

I'm looking at ordering a workshop manual from Australia, the postage cost is more than enough but am I likely to get stung for more cash when it lands here in the UK?
I know that goods coming from the USA can incur extra charges sometimes, I have no idea about Australia though??

No VAT on books and no import duty on books under about £20, you will pay vat on the service of getting it here.

Yes is the short answer, the longer one is sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are not.
If you get stung then you will have VAT on both the cost of the manual and also the postage, you will then have a further clearance charge of around about £12 (depends on carrier)
If the stated value is under about £18 then it should not incur any charges, should however is the important word

Would probably pay to get the sender to print on the label that the item is "documents/books" to avoid the initial charge and then having to try and claim it back. notice that some of the small parcels I have ordered from China have been labels "gift" which I think is there dodge of customs!

Writing ;gift , warranty, Replacement part, not for resale. Whatever you want will NOT work.

I would say putting something like that on it may actually peek the interest of customs rather than them ignoring.

Warranty parts should be VAT and duty free, however they require the appropriate paper trail to prove VAT/duty was paid on the original purchase.
I've received a warranty bicycle frame, and as part of the process, I had to send a copy of the original sales receipt, and evidence the old frame was unusable.

As you say, they want see the item is beyond repair, and of no commercial value. That or you proved the item was re-exported. The only way to do that is with a Carnet. You will also require the carnet to be returned with the replacement item.

Thanks for the link, I did have a quick look on ebay a couple of days ago, around the £45 to £50 mark from a couple of Australian sellers.

That's a great idea, I did have a look at the UK site for it the other day, it isn't listed but I will email them.
