Probably origionally made from 28swg stainless (around 60 years ago) they measured up at ~ 0.35mm...











Can you tell what it is yet? Just one cryptic clue for now... Langy should recognise what i'm doing as he's probably done this job before.

For scale the pins that are bashed in the ply to hold things in alignment are 1.6mm TIG wire. Pulsed @ 175Hz, 18A peak, 11 background, 50% pulse width which was a touch high- could have done with some 0.6mm MIG wire but had to make do with 0.8mm.

The shape reminds me of a motorbike sidecar 'side' window frame, the large type that could sit the 2 kids while the wife took the pillion seat....

probably isn't though, I doubt stainless was used for that purpose 60 years ago.

Could be rear window trim for a split window beetle, i really dont know. I dont know enough of the old european or yank cars to hazard a guess, but it looks like window trimming to me and stainless was used back then. Maybe a split rear window or rear quarter window.

Yep, window trim. TheJoker was soooo close with '49 Mercury, it's a '50 . Sorry haven't got any pics of the car (i'm just welding the trim) but if i remember/get a chance i'll take some when they're finished and installed. It was bought over from the states already chopped and bagged and is just having bits and pieces sorted out to properly finish it.

What wire did you use, and how did you know it would blend with the original Stainless, when polished. (I take they are to be polished)

Wire was 308L or more likely 308LSi, yep they'll be polished and i doubt the joins will be completely invisible- probably have to be very close and looking in the right area to spot though (well hopefully!!). The owner's aware of this. The trim is magnetic, i'm guessing probably 430 stainless. I did have a play with trying to use strips of scrap trim as filler but just couldn't cut it fine enough and the results weren't pretty!

I welded up a few holes in a 68ish Triumph mud guard for a guy, turned out really nice, apart from having a brassy tint in some angles

Yeah, i'm guessing it's from the nickel in 3xx series? This trim will probably end up with a similar effect
