Hello all,

I have a 120v Craftsman MIG Welder Model #196205690

I think it has a bad Transformer but would like to test it or confrim it is bad before trying to buy another one. Which is listed out of stock.

It only works on the high setting #4 when on any other setting it won't spark. Could it be somthing else besides the Transformer? I think it went bad because it got change during use.

There's a chance it could be the selector switch(es).

I'd second that, if you moved the switch during welding it may have arced across the contacts damaging them

What is the layout of the selector or switches? pics of frount and rear (the welder of course) would help to point you in the right direction or offer advice . Oh and welcome

I removed the switch tonight and it tested fine. Now what?

What kind of output at the gun were/are you getting on setting 4? Is it just a spark, or power enough to start a weld?

Do you have the circuit diagram for this machine? Or maybe post a couple of shots of the wiring inside?

If you think the switch is okay, the next step I'd take is to reconnect the switch, then test the input at the back of the switch. This needs a voltmeter, and remember you're playing with high voltage here, as it will be similar to your input voltage, 110 or 230V AC, so go carefully.

If input voltage is same as mains voltage, and the switch works ok, it looks like the transformer. Could be the sudden surge in changing the power settings while welding has blown some of the output diodes on the rectifier plates. Some plate arrangements can be taken apart and individual diodes changed, but you have to check out all individually. Often it's easier to get a new transformer.

We have a few guys who repair machines on here occasionally, they may be along over the weekend to give more advanced advice.

Does sound like the transformer. Check the resistance between the #3 connection and #4. Most likely will be open.

It is enough to weld. Anyone know where I can get a replacement transformer?

The transformer is no longer available as Clarke US went bankrupt.
