Covering a well

Having inherited my Dad's old place in Portugal I am going to do it up to rent out.

There are 2 very old, fascinating wells on the property which supply all the water. One of them dates back to Roman times.

Forget British wells - these are about 15' diameter and have never run dry even in Portugal's terrible droughts.

The covers over them are just old tarpaulins. All ripped and torn and letting in plenty of light. As small fish live in the well to keep the water clean they have their own micro climates which I don't want to disturb by cutting out all the light - I think!

For safety I need some covers - I was thinking about stainless steel netting like you see at the side of the road stopping rock falls. Any other ideas?

I am driving out in a sprinter van in Feb so can carry some stuff.

Some kind of grating, kennedy tor example. Or jail bars like used in do kennels. You can also ge stainless weld mesh

My suggestion: build a new house/mansion on top, with your office over the well, desk just behind. Add crocodiles to water if you prefer

When we moved here some years back, my very first job was to fix a galvanised mesh cover over the well to try and preserve the current number of grand children at ten !

You may be (half) joking but a customer of mine built a sizeable conservatory style room over a well we uncovered in the garden and made it into a feature, glass top on it now

I’d go with at least the grating I know one 6 year old that perished in that fashion, I believe it was a old and wooden cover.

My old man's out there.
The farm he was renting while looking for land had a water mine.
Never heard of them up until that point.
Shame time was tight while I was over. Would have liked to explore it.

Struck gold In my garage last year.



Whole lathe was peppered with gold swarf.
Used to reside in a Goldsmith's apparently according to the friend that sold it to me.

Is the well used for drinking? Are the fish sterilized?. Fish doo in the water sounds too lumpy for Me.

Fish in most reservoirs.

Perhaps it goes through an ozone generator and UV on the way to the tap.

The fish perform a vital task keeping the water clean.
Not sure if water is filtered yet
