Covered car transport

Is anyone here in this line of work?
I need to get the car I've spent the last 14 years restoring down to my mother before she goes.
Would be collected from lincoln and taken to Eastbourne and then back to Lincoln.
Car is around 1350kg (1 ton 7cwt) just under 14ft x 5'7ft

Not my field but I have been warned in the past to check that anyone offering to do the work has commercial insurance.

There used to be a lot of cowboys - happy to cut corners so they could offer cheap rates. Not sure if this is still a problem of if it's been stopped.

i used to do it, both as an employee of a recovery company and as a self emplyed owner/operator.

the best advice i can give you is to contact a good few people for quotes, ask the value of cover their insurance provides, ask for details or photos of previous classics they have moved, bonus points if they have a site with testimonials or feedback (i know it can be faked, but if its bad, its genuine).

you could try contacting crouch, CMG, RS Recovery, possibly Lantern. they are the big hitters of the industry so dont expect low prices, but ive worked alongside all fo them and they take pride in their work.

looks like an ex cazoo van, just be carefull on payload, when i worked for BCA i know a few cazoo vans got tuged by DVSA and were over on rear axle weight

Their website says 2500kg max payload i think my car is 1355kg..
I assume there is a plate on the van i could check?

No way will that carry 2500kg - you’d need to check the ULW, and bear in mind if you get pulled they’ll weigh it with driver and any crew, plus anything else you’re carrying. I’m assuming it’s plated at 3500kg so it can be driven on an ordinary car licence and no tacho.

Correction - it’s plated at 5,500kg so will be OK weight wise, crack on!

Are you just taking it there for her to see, and bringing it straight back ?

Sorry for stating the obvious, but would it be possible to collect her to come and see the car, or is she in no fit state ? is so, it would be a lot less hassle and expense.

Yes id be taking it down there for here to see and back the following day. Unfortunately she would not be able to travel. If she could it would have been so much easier all round. So this is the only option sadly

Maybe take advice here (I do not know) but would guess that if you drove into the van rather than reversed, that would distribute the car's weight better over the two axles of the van. But against that, the rear axle of the van is dual-wheeled so reversing into the van could be better. I used to be indecisive, but now I am not sure...

Because a flapping tarpaulin will not do the paint any good.
