couple of questions

first, joint preperation:- when veeing a joint is there any guidance on what proportion of the original edge should be left? or is is a case of anything is OK, or thin enough that your welder can easilly achieve full root penetration? ( my usual & the obvious choice)

Second:- abrasive cuting disks. Can they "glaze" or somehow loose their "edge", having a great deal of difficulty cutting some reclaimed chanel, seems to cut for a bit then stop & just get very hot with no further progress.... whats happenin dudes? Yes they are metal disks and they are not cheepo's and I used 2 different makes with same result....

cuts OK on the bandsaw though... just seems very strange unless it is a harder grade of steel?

cant give a 100% accurate answer to your first question so i wont even try

yea abrasive discs , i presume your talking chop saw here ? will overheat and refuse to cut if your not carefull cutting big sections .
best to cut thick flat sections etc set up vertically in the chop saw vice .less surface area to cut then

thought it might.... trying to mitre 4x2 chanel.... bandsaw was no slower at the end of the day, just more difficult to set up.


can they be re-dressed or junk?

With the joint prep i should think you "v" it down to a depth that your welder can fully penetrate whats left (the bit not v'd out).

I've had a couple of the 4 1/2" cutting discs recently that won't cut well to start with..until a bit is worn off them.

I cut with an abrasive chop saw and find that they don't like wide flat surfaces. If I'm cutting angle I cut down one side then turn it to cut the other or if cutting square with thickish wall I set it up to cut a corner first and it goes through a lot quicker.

Pretty much. Process and personal choice can effect things, might go with a 'knife edge' prep for TIG versus leaving a 'landing' (unveed origional edge) with stick for example. Somewhere around 1-2mm fairly typical for a landing

very confused....

generaly abrasive cutting disks need high surface speed . rather than cut a large piece of metal in one go. its preferable to run the blade backwards and forwards cutting small depths at a time otherwise the disk clogs overheats and cant clear the cut metal hence no progress
