So, bit of a new project, I have been asked to make a arm, This is for an extractor hood in a kitchen so needs to look reasonably smart (they are after a contempary style, probbaly in stainless)
They have an island in the kitchen with a hob on it but they don't want the extractor hanging over it all of the time.
Against the wall is a 4 oven aga and they want the extractor hood to live above that most of the time and be able to pull it out to cover the island when needed.
I have already made some over-sized tracks for led lights for them and they are quite happy to have threaded bar drilled through walls etc so the industrial look is welcome.
I can either make the hood myself (I am thinking thin stainless sheet) and have a remote extractor and make up the ducting to it or find a suitable ready made hood and just suspend it. They will be open to other ideas though,
One I have had so far, there is a handy rsj running over the island, although it is offset to near one edge of it, I thought a simple carriage hanging the hood plus several smaller ones to hang loops of extraction hose and power/lighting cable. I am not sure how I would hang the hood offset to the beam though without making the runner a tight tolerance to the beam. There is a second beam but about 2m away from the other end of the island. Not sure how usefull that could be? The Island is also off-set from the aga so something that just slides in and out is not really an option. I would also have to hang the hose to the center of the room to allow it to be used against the aga wall.
I have also been looking at some welding hood arms and showed them some pics but they think there is too much hose in relation to the arm. The arm itself needs to be more of a center-piece.
Since then I have found this
I think something along those lines 'might' work but it would need to be freely moved rather than locking it in place with hand wheels, also the plastic joints would be a no-no although I might get away with making joints and running hose through the center. If I'm doing that then I might as well just make the whole arm as a cage and run tube through it. I am thinking something that can be mounted on the aga wall and concertiena out to the island. Maybe some sort of wire rope attached to a pulley on the wall and a counter weight on the end of it to suport it when extended.
There is plenty of space to work with. To the island side of the aga is empty wall (2m wide x 3m+ high)
There are 1m or so of kitchen units and worktop between the wall and the aga but they are happy to loose the upper ones if required. Only request is, the upper cuboards currently have underlighting in them and they would like this transfered to anything replacing them if it is large enough to create a shadow on the worktop.
Any ideas welcome! Apart from searching for welding hood arms and gimble arms I don't really know what they are called!
