We've a job come in, 30 odd 3m x 1.5m x 8mm sheets of Corten A or B (Client not decided which grade yet) to shear and fold. Chomp it into 3m x 0.5m lumps, then one 90 degree fold, and one 45 degree fold per piece. Our guilly and press are both 3m long, so we are going to be approaching their limits if it is much tougher than MS. Guilly will do 3m x 10mm. Just.

What's Cortens workability properties like? Much tougher than S275/S355? Don't want to cause me self any problems. I have enough of them

A lot of work just for some fancy path edgings. Money to burn

You won't notice any difference, for shearing and bending, its no different to the normal plates.

It's got copper in it so it doesn't get past the surface rust stage. Shipping containers are made of it and they're all bent bits. Just your kind of thing: no galving required so harder to lose.

I used E8018 rods last time i welded Corten. I'm not sure if the weld metal would perform the same as the parent material?

which 8018........there should be a suffix

What you need is either a matching composition -W or a 2.5% Nickel -C1

So 8018-W2 or 8018-C1

The weld metal will be slightly tougher and harder than the plate

I used it to make woodstoves as it lasted much longer than mild. In 4mm it had a much 'crisper' feel in the shear and required a bit more pressure to cut. I only bent small bits, but it felt a slightly tougher. Most of the cutting was plasma, so no different. As for welding, mig and MMA with standard rods and wire. All the welding was on the exterior of the firebox, so the ultimate condition was hidden by the enclosure and prob of no interest in the lifespan. I would be interested in the more informed discription of its bendability. I also built a few stainless stoves, after the first uses they turned a lovely copper colour and stayed that way.
