I need to mig weld a bit of corten in a shipping container, do I need special wire or gas for this?
It is going to be a one time job and aesthetic is not important, strength is, it should not fall off.
I believe you can use regular mild wire and gas up to 10 or 12mm as there's enough dilution from the parent metal into the weld. Especially if it's not going to be left rusty as there will be some difference in the visual appearance once rusted.
I've got some corten together rods and the only thing mentioned on them is improved colour/weathering matching so if you are painting it then I'd say normal wire will be fine.
I've seen plenty of patches/lock plates/hinges done on containers with regular mig/arc and never seen any problems.
