cordless drill???

what determine the power of a drill is it the amp hr..
theres a few drills that is 18volts but amp hr varies from 1.05 to 4 amp hr.
or am I looking in the wrong direction.
I have a 14 volt makita drill but the thing is gutless.
its ok for around the house for small jobs like drilling/screwing screws into wood but thats it.
I'm looking for a drill that is not to heavy that you need two hands to hold the thing.
I did have a dewalt which I sold to gordon on here.
that was a bit to much for what I want it for and bl**dy heavy to.
I'll pay up to £150.
I went to open up a hole from 7mm to 8mm but the drill promptly stopped.
so this is what I need a drill that can do above.
I've chosen a makita because I've a few of their tools (apart from the drill) for years and still have them.

The amp/h tells you how long it will go between charges. I would get a brushless body only and a battery as its the most cost effective if you already have a 18v charger.

Just as a side note opening up holes from 7mm to 8mm is a hard task for any hand drill as the bit pulls itself into the work and you end up taking a very big cut.

The ampere-hour determines how long the drill will run for between charges. If the motor draws 5 amps and the battery is rated at 10 ampere-hours it will run for 2 hours (5 amps x 2 hours = 10 amp-h). (Simplified, in real life as the battery discharges it may not be able to provide the current, but you get the idea, ampere-hours is simply amps x hours)

The nomenclature is amp-hr, not amp/hr, this denotes amps divided by hours, which is meaningless.

The power of the motor is given by amps x volts, so if a motor takes 5 amps at 12 volts (60watts) it isn't as powerful as a motor that takes 5 amps at 18v, ie 90 watts.

I wouldnt look at anything lower than 2amp-hr. Otherwise you will be forever waiting for batteries to charge.

personally I wont buy Makita, used it for yrs, and the old stuff is still going strong. The leccys did use it but were going through kit like on business.

All my gear is Ryobio now, the new 4a/h batteries are far better than the older stuff, and its as cheap as chips

Ive got 3 drills of differing size, all take the one+ batteries

The lower amp hr batteries are smaller and lighter, so bigger isn't always better. I have a Hitachi and am happy with it. I also have cheapo battery drills from B&Q and they're great for using to do plasterboarding etc as they're so light compared to a decent battery drill.

Battery drills are great and convenient but if just for the odd job for drilling holes then you can't be a corded drill.

I may be wrong ...but in my experience the higher the voltage of the batteries the more power it can produce. Then you have how it is geared that can also affect its power/torque.

One thing I can't understand is why even brand new drills ,with a new bit, skips one segment every couple of rotations. When using cross head screws. Lol

Voltage is as much speed related for a motor as anything, the current they can draw is just as important, and that depends upon both the battery and the motor. A battery will sag on voltage depends how much current it's giving out, bigger batteries can provide that current level will less sag, etc.

For 150 quid I'd get the brushless makita and a 3.0ah battery - in fact, I did, I replaced my old bigger Makita with it after it got nicked - and it's been flawless, nice and light, fairly compact, battery charges in the time it takes to have a cuppa.

I got the Bosch 3.0 ah one from Screwfix recently, it isn't brushless but I'm not a heavy user so will probably do me fine. I paid £90 with a 10% off voucher, battery lasts ages and it has plenty of torque.

If I was a heavy user Id probably splash the extra for brushless but for the amount of use I give it it will hopefully be ok.

I've just got a load of second hand Makita LXT stuff, all brushless

So far it's ok, I do use my stuff quite hard and expect it to last (my dewalt 18v stuff was 6-7 years old and going strong)

I have a drill with 1.3ah batts that stays in the van, I use the bigger stuff with 3 and 4ah batteries

One thing I can't understand is why even brand new drills ,with a new bit, skips one segment every couple of rotations.

This is usually due to a combination of the wrong bit, insufficient pressure and not holding the drill square to the screw head. Once you've allowed the bit to slip a few times it's well on the way to becoming scrap.

I am about to change to makita by getting thier new range 115 grinder sds drill and a die grinder all 18 v for fitting

Just fed up with extentions left out of windows for me. Other week one tripped at the board in the first hour so I went home!

The amphora is the battery capacity. This does not relate to drill power. That's down to the motor. It may have a sticker on it giving the motors power. If the drill is stopping under load the battery is either low or goosed.

that's because your probably using pozi bits on phillips screws or vice versa
