Milwaukee and hikoki would be ahead of makita and dewalt
Just interested in this comment, I ruled out hikoki as they don't do everything I need but having held and used the milwaukee they are not ahead of anything.
How long ago was that though?
Cordless technology has been moving at a lightning pace over the last couple of years.
Milwaukee seem to be on a mission to make an M18 version of everything, 190 odd tools and rising. Some really niche stuff too.
Most of their tools seem to come out somewhere near the front on the various tests (somewhat dubious how independent some of those are so taken with some salt).
So you are getting a platform with a massive variety of fairly solid offering, which is really their selling point.
Since their takeover and rebrand Hikoki appear to have set their sights on catching up with Makita and have release a ton of new brushless tools in the last 18 months.
Their 18/36v multivolt platform is ingenious and backward compatible with the older Hitachi stuff. They also have some weird stuff too like rebar benders, a 9" grinder and are releasing the first 1/2" cordless router in a few weeks.
Makita and Dewalt of course are long established and not standing still either, so there appears to be a lot of competition at the moment which is really pushing things forward.
I'm on the Hitachi/Hikoki platform and been extremely pleased with them so far.
I've got 18 and 36v tools and like the fact i can just grab a battery that will fit either. 36v stuff is a beast - lot of the tools are on par or sometimes even slightly ahead of the other brands.
Some of thier stuff is mediocre, especially the older stuff that isn't yet brushless, and the DIY end of the market - but then you are really buying into the battery system, as each manufacturer has tools that excel in certain areas and its just not practical or cost effective to have half a dozen different battery systems, so you have to to compromise at some point.
I've used the M18 drills at work, and they were fine, compact, powerful nothing to complain about. Haven't used much else from their lineup.
Dewalt stuff I’ve used has been older, non flexvolt, and I didn’t like the impact driver (but to be fair it might have been shagged).
Im a Bosch Blue fan........got lots and never had a problem (a long time now)....I got 2 x 14.4V drills 15 years ago....still going on original batteries
Once upon a time I could get it at trade but the supplier has changed hands...thye best buy was that tip off on here when Wolsley (Plumb Centre) were selling off the Li Ion hammer drill with 2 batteries for 60 quid.....got one and its actually better than a 24v one i bought years ago thats very heavyI like my Bosch blue gear too. Only got their gear in 12V though. My 18V gear is all Makita, & for how often I use the 18V stuff nowadays, it'd be a case of just replacing things for the sake of it, so the 18V gear is still Makita.
