I do remember the white anti seize but can't remember the name, lead plate paste and also used tubes of very high temperature "grease" it looked like strawberry jam !!!

Did a job for sub-sea power connections years ago, general thread lube was spec'd as Swagelock Pure Goop, dear old stuff to be splashing about on M20 stuff.... and a couple of critical bits spec'd as lubricated with silver goop, now that is spendy stuff.

"White Lead" is what the old timers used.
Used to mount RR wheels, took an act of congress to allow modern lubes under the AAR rules.

I think this is a case of "horses for courses"? Copper slip contains particles of copper, and I think that by modern "nano tech" standards those particles are quite large, but the product is good for all the applications we've been using it for, but more modern requirements might benefit from the ceramic stuff with much finer particles which also cope well with high temperatures.

White does not mean anything really; lots of white products, including Rocol's RT15 which was £100 for 80g many, many years ago. However, it stands up to oxidising substances extrordinarily well, stuff like 99% nitric acid, which tends to attack most other stuff including silicone grease. That is food safe too.

the stuff i got given came from the cyanide plant used on pumps hp steam gear and on stainless nuts and bolts so must be good there cant be much copper in copperslip as i tested some using my megga insulation tester at 1000 volts and it gave no reading

My bad that's what I'm calling white grease @tom2207 it is a pale whitewashey type colour.

Yes, moly for high temp use, but copper fine at lower temps. Definition of quality -adequacy for purpose.

Mmm, doing a bit of reading, the difference between the copper-based greases and the moly-based greases seems to be the the former are intended to prevent seizure in static components and moly(disulfied) is a lubricant for moving parts.

The nickeleze stuff has a fairly horrendous safety warning on it - I make sure I'm wearing gloves when using it.

I tripped over a big problem with leaking stainless steel coolant pipework - screwed together, and every joint leaked - and there were a lot of joints. Well respected design engineer had flippin' specified anti-seize on all threads! Had obviously heard about stainless galling, and with no experience of pipework . . . Funnily enough, anti-seize doesn't work that well as a thread sealant - a decent Loctite thread sealant sorted that problem.

I have a lot of time for basic copperslip compounds - cheap, extremely effective.
The more modern ceramics etc are great too - but its diminishing returns for most applications until you get into high temperature stuff.

One thing that they are replacing copperslip on is high temperature turbines and turbos - the calcium in some standard copperslip compounds reacts with chromium in the steel under extreme heat to produce hexavelant chromium.
