Cooker Hob

Hello,
Im am going to be replacing the old hob for a new one,
The oven and hob are seperate and the oven is staying. I know to turn all the fuse's off, and i know a little about wiring and so on, but still first time im doing a hob and it somthing i want to learn to do, not just pay a guy to do for me.
Any Tips would be greatly appreceated.. actuly a step by step account of what i should do would be better but tips are still good.

Very simple job, hobs and ovens.

I switch off the cooker circuit.

You might have to pull the oven out, so you can get access to the clips which hold the hob to the worktop. If its a built in, probably 4 screws, revealed by opening the door.

All the connections will be in place, might be worth having a bit of new cable to hand just in case the old is a bit stiff or short. Size wise, you probably need about 6mm2 cable, t&e. (MK or another spark type will confirm that, or tell me i am wrong )

Put the new putty stuff around the edge, try not to get it to close to the edge, if it comes out it looks rubbish, and get grubby,

30mins should cover it without having to rush

Last few i have fitted have gone straight into the existing hole without any extra cutting of the worktops mind you

I was lucky enough to have replaced my oven before the Part P regulations came in. Seemed easy enough at the time - earth, neutral and live wires and some clearly marked screw connectors for them to go into. Sorry, didn't look at the hob at the time.

The one thing I found was that heat is bad for wiring. The fan in our fan oven had failed, and the wiring hadn't been sensibly routed or secured. Back of the oven was red hot without the fan, and the wires were...err...touching it.

I certainly don't go the gas bottle route!!!!!!!!!

I've always had gas hobs, I was guessing electric hob hard wired in at higher amps??

Part P appears to be an England and Wales thing - I'm not sure what people are allowed to do in Scotland. Something similar to Part P was supposed to happen back in 2005, but I don't know if it did or whether things were trusted to the superior common sense of the Scots.

Like it says in the disclaimer at the bottom of the page we'll offer advice on the forum to help point people in some direction, but they'll need to check things with suitable professionals as there is no guarantee anyone on here knows what they are talking about. That's especially true for me.

Don't know the answer to part P Malcolm, I am happy though chasing wire and gas pipe runs.

I always wear wellies when switching on for first time. Gas connections are tested using a match, geez is only a few mille bars

Part P don't apply over the boarder it works on a warrant system and off top of my head home-owner are allowed to change hobs. Checking the circuit is isolated is the hard part personally would go for turn the lot off just to make sure and keep an eye on the fuse box that no one turns it back on! Check that the new hob isn't bigger (power) than the old one don't want to overload the cabling.

I was under the impression part P was for new work or additions. Simple replacing of existing fittings etc is ok without

MK is this not covered by Like for Like even in a 'Special Area'? (assuming no additional wiring or upgrade to 6mm or similar is involved)

No part P required for wiring a cooker, if its to an existing connection point....99/99999% sure on that one.

no Part P over the boarder works on a strange building warrant system that seam to change with the weather some rooms you can add circuits some you can't you can rewire your own 2 story house on a like for like but not a 3!

Jobs don't come much easier than changing a cooker hob but I think you're still obliged to call in a Part P qualified electrician, at least in England and Wales.

Hello, Thank to all that answered, im still alive and sparking.
Firstly it was quite simple once i got into it all, live neutral, and earth as some one mentioned. I also asked a electrition (a friend) about what i did he said it was all good.
Im anoyed though, because when i took the hob out initaily, i found it had been wired wrong!!! and that was by an electrition who we had do it years ago. couldnt have been much cop! iv attached a pic of the hob as it came out from the space, i was not happy, ofcoarse if there was a fault the metal top would have gone live. and the fuse box doesnt have trips so there was no sign that it was faulty.. i was not happy about this
