conversions BSI to SAE

Hi all

i dont know where else to put this thread but here it goes

I just got given to me a set of snap-on BSI wrenches

I was wondering in you guys had a good site with the conversions on it

form fractional to decimal or from bsi to sae

I tried google and came up empty

the wrench im most interested in the the 7/8 bsi and 11/16 bsi

Moden british standard sizes (started 1973 ish) IS metric.
The old british standard sizes eg. Whitworth, BSF are in the 2nd result in wozzaahs google list. Nb pre 1st World War sizes are different.

The 7/8bs wrench has an inside width of 1.302.5tho

the 11/16bs wrench has an inside width of 1.120tho does this help any???

im estimating that this wrench was made in the 60's blue-point supreme doubble open end wrench

ill get a picture up asap i just need to charge the AA's

ps ive never heard the term Wworth before

Try this 2nd in wozz list !

Most bolts in uk were WW/BSF till 1980s Thread angle = 55

AF (across flats) is the American sae, and has always been known as the bastard size. The one you mention is in the "Wrench Size Conversion Table" line 10, and shows there is .008 different. The next size is 13/16 AF = 7/16 WW = 1/2" BSS ie 7thou different, and the rest are much worse, not really useable for pulling them up hard.

Never use slack spanners, you'll knacker your nuts.

i was almost sure they converted evenly with sae im out by .025 on the 11/16 and out .013 on the 7/8

Damn! oh well i guess if im stuck i can still use it!

its funny i can use my 1/4'' bs on any 7/16 bolt with no problems no slippage weird.......

I was always told that max tollerance for open ended spanners = .002" per 1/16" dia of bolt, any more & you can start wedging the jaws open .

So 1/4"ww = 4x1/16 = .008". From table 1/4"ww jaw = .445" & 7/16 AF =438". 445-438 = 007" it's in tollerance.

But 3/8"ww =.710" & 11/6 AF = .686 = .024" diference, but tol = .012" so it's too slack.
