Continuity Clamp

OK, so my welder is en route... I have a steady supply of scrap to practice on. I have pretty much everything that I think I need to get started.

I've read a lot of the tutorials, verging on information overload... so the basics are firmly back in my head (been 20 years since I did any form of welding!)

One thing eludes me... clamping the continuity clamp. Does it matter which side of the weld to clamp it to?

1. Butt welding two bits together - best to go with the biggest part?
2. Car body welding - onto the body (obviously)
3. Does it not really matter so long as there's good continuity?

The best place is nearest the weldment, you may find that the largest/heaviest/most stable is the best bet, as the weight of the cable and clamp will tend to move the work piece if not supported enough

This is how our clamps end up after a prolonged session of plenty of volts flying through them.
This started off the week as a new connection, copper ferule around the cable, clamped tight and the insulation up to the clamp.
Even a good connection gets hot at this point, melts the insulation, and eventually the cable melts. Just wants making off again, and it will be fine for another week
Just use the clamp to fasten the cable directly to the steel until its repaired
