Constant hissing from new MIG welder?

I've just bought a new Jasic 160 Pro Inverter MIG, set it up all ready to go but I've stumbled at the first hurdle. Slightly embarrassed that after 6 months of welding last year I can't get the gas setup... I have a 5% argon 9 litre bottle hooked up with the kit Weld Equip sold but when I turn the regulator valve there's a continuous loud hissing from inside the welder. The hissing doesn't seem to be coming from the pipe connection on the rear or the torch itself but inside the welder. Shouldn't the euro torch control the gas flow, have I missed something?

Sounds like a loose connection in the body of the welder, the torch will only control gas after the solenoid, if the leaks further back than that I will just leak due to pressure from the bottle, open up the machine and check / tighten any connections.

Thanks for the reply! Pulling the trigger seems to make no difference... There's not much to see in the machine, the connection between gas inlet and euro torch outlet is hidden in the side you can't get to. I'm generally cynical about new products being faulty, most of the time it's user error but I can't see what I've done wrong. This could ruin my Christmas holiday welding plans...

My vote goes to a leak as well, work the regulator to see if the tone of the hiss changes with the pressure change...that will confirm it.

I would not be dismantling to get at it... back to the seller under warranty is the only answer.

that's why I suspect a leak further back, if it's a new machine you need to speak to the vendor so as not to void any warranty.

It would be very poor to find a pipe not properly attached internally...very annoying if you then had to send the machine back etc etc. Obviously I wouldn't know as I wouldn't want to void the warranty...

The fact it's a loud hissing and also the fact there is nothing at the torch does sound like it's an open pipe where you can't see it.

I would be tempted to delve into the machine but I know with some electronics there are means that can inform the manufacturer it has been 'got at', probably doubtful that a MIG welder would have such but don't think I would risk it.

Hi, thanks for the replies, it was a loose pipe at the relay - not properly pushed in. Nice work Jasic! No way I was going to miss out on several weeks of welding!

Youd think that, but in the rtech manual i got with my mig it actually advises to take the cover off every few months and blow out with light pressure as build up of dust and other things could void warranty
