Considering building a trailer for a mobility scooter

I have found this for sale, which is the nearest I can find to what I have in mind.

What I am interested to know is how the wheels are attached to the axle? This trolley is £50, a set of wheels might be £20 plus the other bits, should I be bothering?


My design is more of a box shape so that clear boxes can be put into it for carrying shopping etc.

I've made and modded a few trolleys similar to that, the wheels are usually just retained by a washer and split pin, sometimes they use a push nut,

Like Paul above, I was gonna "guess" at a washer and cotterpin, seems a bargain for £50. Wouldnt like to make one for £50 budget. Would benefit from some form of support gusset to the axle assembly for kerb bouncing

Here's one I did earlier, these are fitted with bearings, some of the cheap wheels just have nylon sleeves

Thanks all, so the axle is just a tube to match then. I assume it will have a washer at the back of the wheel too, as a bearing surface. Still considering my options, I also considered one of these:

They are usually 20mm dia, some have a washer tacked onto a 20mm bar at the inside of the wheel, others have a larger bar turned down to make a step for a loose inner washer to sit against,

i would go with this note the handle can be clipped off easy to mod mesh sides and plastic bag inside also 13inch wheels

saw one like this with a seat inside being used for severely disabled person towed by mobility scooter

The wheel could alternatively be held in place by a starlock washer on a tube/bar. For something like this where it will be moving a lot I would definitely want a bearing rather than a nylon sleeve.

I agree for £50 its great BUT its probably too big for a mobility trailer to be honest..

I have that one for my wife to tow with her scooter when we are away fishing but the wheelbase is slightly narrow...

I have cap on wheels on my double wheel muck carting ,wheel barrow , early on one of the caps came off when it was 3/4 filled with wet concrete .
My solution to the problem was to use a meter of 12 mm studding , hole saw cut nylon bushes for a hard push fit inside the axle tube when dropped in boiling water for a few minutes so to soften them .
I had in fact packed the tube ends with about 85 mm of waxy chopping board ,opened up the pilot hole to accept the studding before pushing them in the tube at one end only .and slide the stud through and used the extra length to pull the opposite sides nylon packer into the axle tube.
I then add a pair of thin nylon bearing washers well coated in silicon grease to the axle tube stops, thick silicon coated the wheel holes .& put them back on the axle tube , added two more well greased nylon bearing washers , then slipped on a steel washer on each outer end .
Adjusted the free play with a nut on each end of the stud , then when OK added another nut to each end and lock nutted it up .

I think I had to end up cutting off 100 mm of excess studding .

So far it's managed in eight years to move about 25 tonne of ready mix, several thousand bricks , many loads of soil and even more loads of general garden waste .


You may find that there is enough meat on the wheel dish for you cut a hole in each wheel dish & for you to turn up a set of bolt together taper bearing bearing'ed Hubs to fit to the wheels to a precision turned bar welded into the square section .. so you can then fit them on the axles

If you want to tow a trailer with a disabled persons buggy type vehicle on the public roads or public accessible footways you may encounter various legal & insurance problems .
