Even more interesting might have found my problem.

I am posting from that very computer now.

It seems it MIGHT be a dodgy connection on the mother board where the power supply attaches (clip). That would explain its unusual behaviour with 3 power supplies perhaps.

Its now running without soldering but it might be a dry joint as I could be disturbing it as I plug it in and out.

My dilemma is now solved really. if I can keep this running till just after exmas I can fund a replacement that I want not just that I can afford

I never buy top of the range so I can do some research on which is best bang for the buck as I feel prices are logarithmic and there is a balance/tipping point to be found.

i5 offers the most performance for your money if looking upper end, imo i7 is just too much more for not a large performance gain unless you use up to date OS and programs that can use the features... many older programs cant
