compressor sound proofing

hi all

i am going to start building my soundproof box for my conpresser and befor i start has any one got any tips for me?

i am using ply wood and carpet with sand on the floor even got some rubber feet to put on the bottom

any tips would be verry help full

I built a box. It is in the projects thread, if my memory serves me right. Extra fans provided the required airflow to keep the machine cool. Tests were done with my setup to ensure that it works within specs.

thanks for that, i have made a start on mine, will get pics some time, i basically want the compressor out of my workshop due to size and not to worried about noise, i have welded up a frame out of 45mm square steel, i made it a little taller than the compressor its self so the heat is at the top, its going to be ply lined with galvanised roof sheet on top and expanding foam in all the joints to make it water tight. going to sit on a contrete base outsite bolted on to side of my workshop and hole cut into wall for air line to come thought, power cable so i can have trip boc inside and i need to add another bit of air line so i can have the preasure gauge on the inside.

for ventilation it will be hit and miss, i am going to put a vent on each side to start with, they are about a foot square from b&q, if this is no good i plan to add a bathroom extractor fan to blow cool air inside, this will be wired into the trip box so comes on with compressor is ok, prob wont finish it till after x mas now

Try to place the vent panels opposite the fan built into the pump pulley.

Keeping the pump cool is vital, compressing generates a lot of heat and hot compressed air isn't much use and it absorbs moisture.

If you fit an extra fan (which I suggest you do) make sure its airflow dosn't conflict with the existing fan.

I think a bathroom fan may not be powerful enough, maybe a desk fan would be better.

It would help if you could extend the pump inlet outside the box.

i have just fitted a new motor to it, i got the compressor non running off a friend, he used it for painting cars and has the room temp warm and it overheated, when i got it the whole thing was covered in about 10mm of paint dust and crap, the new motor has a built in fan on the back of it, the old motor did not and had one on the pulley, i have fitted this also so have 2 fans.
thats a good idea about the intake, not sure how i would do it, at the moment the air filter is a box screwed onto the side of the pump and has 4 small plastic pipes coming off, around 10mm long, 7mm inside diamiter maybe, the only thing i could think off is run a hose off each of these ports to the outside of the box maybe?

I extended mine by removing the air filter and using a male pipe nipple to attach a length of vacuum cleaner hose, the other end fitted to the original filter.

If you can't attach to the pump then use some 4 inch soil pipe to get air from the outside as close to the air filter as you can.

If you use secondhand pipes make sure they are clean, you don't want to suck dirt into the pump.

I have this sort of set up (pic) for a compressor on the other side of the wall.
The blue wire is the power cable from the pressure switch to the compressor , running through a steel tube, through the wall.

A flexipipe from the compressor tank is fixed to another steel tube running through the wall on the end of which is a "tee". connected to this is the gauge, pressure switch and a drain tap.

thanks, i will have to go with the second option i think, mine is just a rectangle plastic box screwed onto the side of the pump, has a foam pad inside and these 4 small pipes coming out of it, i will get a pic to explain better, i like the idea of adding a hose to each of these but it may be to restrictive?

the air intake on mine is on top so what is the bust way to exstend it.

all so can you take the conpresser apart as in the pic and it run ok?

where will i get a gadge from to put in the work shop to tell me the presher?

I would strip it but sods law me dad or some one will want to use it.

Pondy, as you are building a compressor house outside of the garage in a sort of lean too arrangement but not bothered about the noise that much I would suggest that you face your compressor fan/pulleys facing the wall and leaving a gap between the wall and housing if you follow, the reason being if you have ever noticed air con units/ fridge units they point to wards a wall and suck cooling air that way over the compressor, they are set up like that because there is always a draught running along a wall no matter which way the wind is blowing, then louvres on the output side. stand it on concrete and some old conveyor belt underneath stop some of the vibrations.

thanks, one fan will have to be up against the workshop wall, i was a boit worried about this but maybe i shouldnt be, the fan on the back will be infront of one of the vent grills i was going to fit?

Ever thought of blowing the air into the workshop/shed? Depending on how much heat it generates it would help heat the space up. I done this in a factory quite a few years ago, but then we had 4 large HPC rotary screw compressors and 4 air driers so there was a considerable amount of heat being produced

I've done similar with mine. The compressor shed is a lean-to against the toilet shed which itself is a lean-to against the main workshop. I removed the bit of wall between the loo and the compressor, nice and warm if a bit noisy!

I have a smaller compressor inside the workshop at the foot of the stairs and a few fridge motor compressors in the office. All nice and warm at no extra cost.
