Companies shutting down for Xmas period, I don't get it ???

Rang one of my suppliers monday 22nd to place an order worth nearly 3 grand, got told we are shut till Jan 5th, so I say why are you there then, reply was decorating !!!
Wouldn't take my order and said ring back on the 5th, Instead I rang a supplier in the USA and placed the order with them instead, I picked up my order this morning from Heathrow and cheaper too

This is why I don't buy British !!!

Years ago you just got 25th & 26th off and that was it !!!, what the hell happened to this country where we shut down completely for 2 weeks !!! Madness in my opinion.

Modern UK we are now a third world country
customer service in the UK is a joke better service from US OF A and China
OK a few places are still left in the UK but as most seem to shut down they are stuck too so have to shut down like the rest of them

from another point if u were all told to work over the hollidays would u just do it or complain ??factorys have to shut down on set times as u cant have people taking holidays willy nilly . i work for myself so it doesnt bother me but it would if i worked for someone .and if u cant plan your requirements and order in advance u have to do without

They were discussing this on QI the other night, apparently in the USA there is no requirement to close or give staff holidays for major religious celebration days. So people in the USA go shopping on Christmas day etc.
Its secularism, the seperation of church and state.

Try telling customers that !!!

Company I work for is still open although with skeleton staff. If a customers machine breaks down I'll be there within 8 hours to fix it.

I will chime on this since I was talking with a few mates at work about this, they were chocked when I told them that lot's of UK companies were closed until January 5th. They were chocked because most of them see the UK as the top of the world in terms of work discipline and productivity. Actually UK and germany, UK more to the side of politeness.
Around here some companies close after lunch on the 24th december and on the 31th december. Not even one day more and some don't even do that on those days, close at the usual time 6 p.m. The only complete days closed are the 25th december and 1th january in this season, since those are national holydays.
But to be honest around here we all wished that the biggest problem of Portugal was the number of days closed for Xmas

Actually this explains why I'm not able to contact the company stated on my thread a bout a great priced lorch. Probably they are closed until 5th January

Some employers use that "shutdown week" as an opportunity to do major works/refits, coupled with a week in the summer allows for 24/7 operation most of the year.

Surely as a Nation we have achieved what all countries strive to achieve. We work to generate wealth but we also enjoy leisure time with friends and family. We have worked hard so we can afford it.
At this time of year we maintain essential services whilst the majority relax.

I used to get Xmas and New Years day off - that was it. Then you had to use part of your annual leave entitlement for any other days and there was often a "names in the hat" situation as the office still had to be open as normal so min number of staff required so full service to public available.
My son and daughter both worked Christmas eve, both had Xmas day off and daughter worked Boxing day (son hadn't a shift). Both worked today - daughter one job in morning (boarding kennels) and another (Primark) in afternoon.

My missus has recently gotten a job with the co-op (midcounties) and they are closed xmas & boxing, and new years. But she still gets paid for them apparently!

Due to many shutting down for the period, I am thinking of going to Huddersfield auto-jumble/car boot Sunday the 28th. Does anyone know, if it is still good for tools and the like, it was years ago but not been for a long time?
