I am overhauling one of these compressors at the moment. Mainly a disassembly and clean/paint job but a couple of repairs too. The pump is of mainly aluminium but for a section of cast iron. I have a couple of questions on the air side I was hoping some body could answer. The unit has a vertical separate air tank and stands in its own cabinet. It is powered by a 3hp motor 240v motor. The air side is pretty substantial pipe work with a heat exchanger and has its own water drain valve mounted on one of the cabinets panels. My questions relate to the unit this drain valve connects to. It is the big black circular piece of cast tube on top of which is a valve. There is nothing inside this tube so what is the purpose of it? Is it acting as some sort of accumulator and what is the valve for. The other question is on the valve shown in line to the heat exchanger. There is a hose pipe that connects to this and the intake filter bowl. What does this valve do? I took the electric part off the valve to find that the two were not connected as in a drive spigot way. The solenoid just sits on a shaft and is held in place by the nut at the end of the shaft. Any feedback would be welcome.
