Comments on a few welds i did today

Right in between the rain showers today i decided to have a go with the welder
as i want to get more practise in before i do to much on the van.

if i could have some comments please as to any problems or issues with my welding

Right i started with two old bits of about 1 mm sheet held together by 2 magnet
things and attached the king of welding clamps

Then i spot welded along the edge.

Then i ran a bead along the joint which i found hard not to run off.

Once i had done that there was not much penertration was it down to me going to fast or was a setting wrong?

Then i had a play wire the wire speed. the middle one was on speed 3
1 to the left was 2 1/2 and the left one was on 2

i didnt clean the metal up on the back but the seem to of penertrated well

then done a couple of big spot welds

then i run a bead along but it was very splatty. ( i think because the metal was rusty and still painted?)

Then had another play with the wire speed and the weld seemed to drop.
what would corse this?

Last is to much heat, so it dropped. Is that CO2?

Corner welds were a bit cold and tall. Needed higher wire speed and/or voltage.

If not cleaned will cause spatter.

Try and keep a consistent torch distance form the work.

That was 0.9mm steelpower setting 1 and wire speed 2.2

If i try and weld 2mm steel do i put both settings up as i would be overlaping

two thinknesses of it.

Any suggestions?

Had a set back with my welding today

While tidying up indoors i managed to break a cerial bowl which
has slashed my thumb open from the edge of the nail right along my thumb
which bled everywhere and a first aider several doors away cam in to clean
it all up but as it was so deep it's all bandaged up for a minimum of 3 days
and have to change dressing each day. so its going to be fun welding the rest of van tommorrow

I use power tools all the time nothing try and tidy and a cerial bowl injers me
that will teach me not to tidy up

welding up rusty cars/vans is never easy, prep it well and as long as the weld sticks to both surfaces you can always get a grinder to make it look good, strength is better than looking pretty.....
