Right, here's one for the sleuths amongst you... identify this hoist! I bought it from a guy who claimed it was a Morris, rated for 500Kg. However it has evidently had the 'quick, the factory inspector's in give that thing a coat of paint' treatment and whichever genius painted it, obliterated the data plates.
Now I reckoned that the SWL, date of manufacture etc. might be stamped into one of the plates so I de-rivetted them (read: prised off with a screwdriver) and... found no impression marks on the back.
So I reached for a scalpel and laboriously scraped the paint off as best I could but needless to say whatever is left isn't too readable.
On the smaller plate I can make out S W L 1/2 TO (I scraped the last letter off
) so I'm happy that it once COULD lift 500Kg, whether it still can remains to be seen.
The second, larger plate has me gripped. You can make out some letters, evidently two lines of text. The top line seems to be yellow letters on a green or blue background whilst the bottom line is the opposite. In addition there may be a logo, symbol or whatever, on the bottom left (maybe a depiction of a hook?).
The bottom line seems to end in STER, and the top line might actually say MORRIS, but if the bottom line says LEICESTER (you can almost convince yourself it does) then that makes no sense because Morris have always been in Loughborough. It could say LANCASTER, but I can't find a hoist or crane maker ever based there.
Of course it could be a model name, and there has been LODESTAR and LIFTMASTER, but not by Morris... and it's definitely STER and not STAR.
The hoist is clearly getting on a bit; the fact that it's rated in Tons and not Tonnes points to it being probably pre-1980 at least. It also uses a pair of chains attached to a rocker arm to activate the lift/lower switch, instead of a switch pendant as is the norm nowadays.
It weighs a bloody ton itself; nearly killed me carrying it up a stepladder to hang it on the RSJ trolley.
I've just bought a second hoist, a King this time, self-propelled jobbie... but overlooked the fact that the drive motor sticks out so far that it collides with the striplights in the workshop so I'll have to move them all
Anyway, have a look at the old one and see if you recognise it...
- and yes, I know, it needs that bolt replacing with a proper shackle pin
