Collet chuck

Off today so filled my day in making a collet chuck. Started at 10 this morning, next thing i knew its 10 at night. Anyway some pics.
I even made a plan.

Its got 1/2 tho runout is that acceptable. It will do for the work i do but i wanted it to be bang on. I will blame it on the chinease collets and nut.

If you run a DTI inside the collet taper and it's good, then yes, it's the collets and/or nut...

When you're talking about half a thou or less, you may want to use a slightly better quality DTI.

But must say, you seem to be getting the hang of this lathing.

As for collet chucks, I owned one for 11 years, and only used it once. Havent bothered with this machine.

They’re very handy for many jobs. Being able to grip onto threads tightly without causing damage is where I really like them, but they’re also useful when a 3 jaw isn’t accurate enough and a 4 jaw takes too long to set up.

I don't know if you're calling that half a division half a thou, but if you are it's actually only 2 tenths of a thou.

That's not bad then. Got my metric and imperial a bit out there. It was a long day

2 tenths is about as good as you could expect from a good commercial collet chuck.
