If any one reads this then you could help I'm 30 this year and got nout to show for it. I've looked in two a evening course welding and fabricating but the closest is 60 miles away sorry the closest best course is that far it's either Bristol or Filton and I feel Bristol is horrendous. I like the ideal of doing my English as I never got it but want a practical course either carpentry or electrics I can already plumb and pipefit just looking to learn a new skill to earn a bit of money weekends and stuff in next few years maybe ict

Never been that good at english and typing on a computer makes you lazy but if you read through what you have posted you will see why. If you have time and effort do English and better your maths if you can. They are basic subjects for most jobs. Do something that you enjoy. Find a job that you enjoy and you will never work again said somebody.

A b in maths is all I need English is not my strongest subject But I might look in to it I'm already a trainee welder fabricator born scrapmurchant with two years pipefitter/plumbing experience I'm just looking to expand or learn new skills sadly work don't want me to go to college

Work out what is important to you, regardless of what work want or like, if being more than a shop floor worker is what you want I'd pursue the college route, in fact that's exactly where I am at the mo, I've just returned to college to redo my GCSEs . I'm 27 and a time served sheet metal worker, but have come to the conclusion that on the shop floor you are a number. No matter what you do and how much work you put out at high quality , you are still something on managements shoe. If you can do it, get off the tools and get into the offices, you might not change the world, but you'll be treat a lot better

Hi, this saddens me that this country or companies don't value education and least of all manual skills. I read an article a few years ago about a couple that married whilst at university studying to be research chemists. After graduating all they could get were short term stints in the labs on 2,3 and 6 month contracts. They decided they needed some thing else to pay the bills that they could put aside when work became available. So they started doing window cleaning, after a few years they were employing people and making more money than they could doing research work.

I've been self employed since I was 16, was told by my school I wouldn't amount to much ( dyslexic, head master actually called me a 'spastic' Not PC then ! ), good job I never listened to them. Failed English and managed OK. I have employed 100's of people over the years. The best people where the ones with out a degree ( a degree does not entitle you to start at the top of a business on a massive salary ) and had common sense ( pretty rare now days ). Exams don't show you who is best, just who can pass the exam. Often practical people find it very hard to put their case forward, I know I did.
Over the years I have done work for multi-nation companies in fields I was never trained in, often looking from the out side makes problems a lot easier to solve.
The most important jobs in the future will be manual ones IT is getting less and less important, the people doing the wiring, plumbing, building, that's where the money will be.
We've moved to New Zealand to retire and here it's the same problem loads of people with degrees and exams coming out of their ears, but no brains.
A young girl I knew in London started a plumbing business but she only did 'easy' jobs, unblock sinks, tap washers etc the stuff 'real' plumbers did not want so they all pass the work to her. She was earning 6 figures last time we spoke.
Often the easy jobs make the best money as most people can't fix basic things any more, and they are desperate to get the problem sorted.
