Coleman Petrol Lamp

Is there anyone on here who can help with a problem I am having with one of these?

When pumping it up to pressurise it, if I release my thumb (before closing it half a turn) from the little hole in the pump all the pressure is released. I know this should not happen as I have had several Coleman burners over the years and they do not do this.

I took the pump off a single burner stove and swapped it over and still the lamp does the same.

I took out the square shaft of the pump and I can see it screws into a a brass fitting. It looks like it has a slot to allow it to be unscrewed with a large flat bladed screwdriver.

I think it is this brass bit that is the problem. Any suggestions?

I've got a Coleman stove and lamp - brilliant pieces of kit.
Never had a problem with mine but have been told the most common fault is blockage of the pipe which has a spring or similar inside that gets heated to vapourised the fuel.

Try and download a manual. Then strip and clean it, maybe replace the generator tube, as compo says this is the usually the source of trouble.

I have used petrol stoves for years but they still scare me. The thoughts of a malfunction inside a nylon tent make me shudder.

Thanks for the link to the manual. It looks like there is a check valve inside. I just need to see if I can get it out

My single burner stove has a blocked generator pipe. They are not cheap to replace. Can they be cleaned?

I did have a stove go up once. For some reason fuel started peeing out of the top leading to a nice ball of flames! Not in a tent though.

I've seen the results of a petrol stove going up, a scout leader in the late 60's was scarred for life on his face/upper body - not nice

Cleaning the generator tube?
On my Whisperlite there is a piece of wire like a pushbike gear cable running up the inside of the tube, which you slide up and down to loosen deposits. The tubes die in the end because I am a tight wad and use pump petrol rather than fancy pants 'stove fuel'. They do last years before they need replacing.
As said above they are not the sort of things to take liberties with, but soo cheap to run.
I always wonder who made the first one, running the fuel pipe through the flame to superheat the petrol was a clever idea. Has he still got a face?
I have also wondered if Optimus Prime was involved.

I know two people who have been seriously burned with pressure stoves and lamps. They used to supply a thing called a pricker to clear the generator on most lamps and blowlamps.
