Colchester Triumph Start/Clutch Lever Question

Hi folks,

Any of you with a Colchester Triumph, (@fizzy) how does your clutch lever work? On mine, the motor runs constantly from pressing the start button on the plinth, but spindle only engages when I lift the clutch lever (it's supposed to pull out and then lift as a safety feature but mine just lifts?!).

I'm asking as I was watching Tom Lamb on YouTube and he was moving his Triumph into his workshop in a revamp/move about, and his clutch lever seems to start the motor, it seemed to be too quiet to be running in the background like mine does?

I presume they are the same as the roundhead student lathes.
Standard ones with the clutch work the way yours does. If it has what they called "third shaft control" then the motor starts/stops/reverses with the travelling lever and there is no clutch.

I don't think the roundheads came with third shaft control. Maybe as an option?

My Student had the third shaft control and yes it was an option.

Standard Triumphs didn't have a clutch sadly. Lift lever to start. To reverse flip the little middle lever.
Yes mine pulls out and lifts but I don't think that is how the clutch lever type work.

So yours, I presume being standard, just starts and stops the motor from the headstock lever?

Ah OK. Does yours have a brake then?

Got a Mascot here that works the same as this.

It has decided it does not want to drive at all at the moment.

My Student (with a Matrix clutch) would start by just lifting the lever, although you could pull it out it worked either way. I never investigated why it did it, I always presumed something had been snapped, rounded or removed for convenience.

My rounded student, lift lever motor on.
Small lever in center Rev motor 3ph, press down on main lever brake.
Neighbour's different can't rember but no small lever.

Yes indeed.

Yes mine does have quite a good brake but seldom use it. Don't want to wear it out
