You can do it like that, but why do it the slow way and risk cam-in or indexing errors? The fastest way is to use a swing threading tool, you just bang the lathe straight into reverse (which you can do with 3 phase) then add your next increment on the cross-slide dial whilst it's returning and when it gets to the start bang it in forward again. The other way is to stop the lathe, wind out the cross-slide, run the lathe backwards,wind the cross-slide in and go again. You keep perfect index and you're only stopped for the time it takes you to set the dial back to zero.
