Colchester Student Mk1 drive belt slipping off

Any ideas why this would be happening? It's a single flat belt, and we replaced it onto the pulley once just now, and it slipped back off. The pulley is greasy (we gave it a quick wipe down), would that be the issue? Should there be any grease where the belt contacts? Or might it be something else?

So, is grease on the pulley ok?

No.

OK, we cleaned the grease of and it seems to ok for now. Not sure how the grease it getting there tho.

Keep an eye on it for leaks. Remember that a belt only works, unless toothed, by virtue of friction. Grease and oil are the last things that you want anywhere near the contact surfaces.

Is the pulley crowned? Maybe it's a flat homemade pulley?

It's been working fine since we got the lathe at the beginning of the year - hopefully it's just the grease thing. We'll have a go at cleaning it more thoroughly and see how it goes.
