As already said by others I've had Ipad/Iphone that will sit on charger for some time before any signs of life, sometimes overnight.

It did....but it does have a sensor on it that has turned red. (Just like the iphones)
However after a full charge over night it's at least working.

There must be more to it than it's simply run out of charge as you say it won't charge.
Does it have wireless charging capability? If so and it will charge using that but not via a cable then that would point to a faulty charge socket.
Have you tried cleaning out the charge port (is it still the lightning port on the latest ones?) with some folded paper dipped in IPA?

Not sure...my son was more angry his son had been told to lie by great nanny...

She will be asked on Wednesday what exactly she did with it.
She is totally averse to technology ( not even got a mobile phone) so it's possible She washed the coke off under the tap. She is that cookie...

At the risk of confusing matters, it doesn't matter how many amps a charger is capable of delivering, it can only deliver those amps if the voltage is high enough to "push through" the resistance of the devices charging circuit. Your typical USB port that we use for charging should deliver 5v to your device, a dedicated charger might bump that up to 5.2v and therefore deliver more power (more amps) than a regular USB socket on your PC.

A PC/Mac USB socket might not have a supply rated for any higher current because it causes heat build up inside the machine/system so they keep the voltage regulated to the lower value. Some newer devices have uprated USB which can deliver a little bit more power and (I assume) some systems/devices are "smart" so they can tell how much power is SAFE and make increased demands to the equally smart "power supply".

I put "safe" in caps because this is why that 50p Chinese cigarette lighter charger might charge your device a LOT quicker. In fact it might even blow it up because the voltage regulation is extremely unlikely to be as precise as the "correct" charger or your USB derived power. It could easily be sticking out anything from 5 -6 volts which your device may or may not be able to handle. Oh and don't forget, a car battery will happily deliver several hundred amps if it gets the chance! So in reality a dumb car charging accessory might actually help in this case or it might blow up the iPad.

Only one way to find out.

That's exactly what I'd do, as everyone's said devices these days are basically (if not actually) waterproof, I'd rather have clean water than sticky sugary gunk all over it.

I agree with being angry with her for teaching the child to lie.

Not quite. The device being charged signals to the charger the current it wants. If the charger can offer that current, that is what it gets, otherwise it will give whatever it is rated for. This is apart from the internal resistance of the device. All other things being equal, a charger will pull almost the same current at 5.2V as it would at 5V...

Let's assume that the (simplified) load is 10 Ohms. From Ohms law we know that I=E/R so 5/10 gives us half an Amp.
At 5.2V we have 520mA being drawn.

It makes no difference what the charger is capable of, the device will only draw what it needs. You could have my bench 5V @ 100A supply, but the current drawn would still be half an Amp.

More to do with the regulator's current capability than heat build up. A 1A regulator cannot deliver any more current even if allowed to run very hot. They will normally fold back if overheated.

The objection to Chinese junk tends to be electrical safety rather than adequate regulation.

It could easily be sticking out anything from 5 -6 volts which your device may or may not be able to handle. Oh and don't forget, a car battery will happily deliver several hundred amps if it gets the chance! So in reality a dumb car charging accessory might actually help in this case or it might blow up the iPad.

The car charger is more likely to die or fall to pieces rather than damage the device connected.

Part of the USB-C standard is the device can communicate with the charger to establish what voltage/current the device can handle. IIRC it can be up to 24V, but if communication can't be established, it should default to 5V/500mA.

Even the older standard was IIRC only 500mA, but could be boosted by the resistance applied between the data wires.
However cheap chargers often simply outputted 5V at up to 2A regardless.

I think the old power delivery spec went up to 5A at 20V, the new PD spec for USB 4 now goes up to 5A at 48 volts!
