coil spring rate choice

Hi people

so I am going to get a set of coil overs made up to replace my standard shox on my L200
these coil overs will run along side the torsion bars to help with the sagging issue due to heavy winch bumper and winch on the front of the truck.

My question is what rate spring to choose? I am in a dilemma I can have what ever rate I want really but I am not sure what rate to choose any advice would be great.

That really is a how long is a piece of string question . . . ;-)

How much do you want to lift it? How heavy is it? what angle of dangle are the existing shocks at?

Could you simply sit a trolley jack on a suitable set of scales, or multiple scales, and lift it to the height you want? Would give a starting point for the lift required.

Any reason why you simply can't reposition the torsion bars as I assume they are on splines at the fixed end?

The shocks are pretty much straight down, the torsion bars being repositioned wont help things.

It is not just about lifting it
it is to take the extra weight of the heavy add on's like metal winch bumper and winch, good idea about the scales under the jack.
The springs are measured per layer are they not?

Torsion bars can be adjusted if if you run out of adjustment you can reindex them to gain more adjustment

If you do want to go the coilover route then potentially you could reduce the torsion bar adjustment to get the required rate

Is it sitting level with the addition of the winch and bumper or is it a case you want to stiffen the front end to deal with the additional weight?

it is sitting level now after I re indexed the torsion bars but I would like the coilovers to stiffen the front end and deal with the extra weight because the torsion bars seem to drop after a while, reducing the torsion bar adjustment would be advantageous too

Ah, that makes more sense, have a winch bumper and winch on this, torsion bars have been reset and adjusted to lift it and while it doesn't droop over time it does dive more under braking but want to keep it soft so don't lose articulation

mine dives under breaking too a lot! it is a trade off with articulation that is why if I do go coil over route they need to be right

I have been looking at air springs the ones that are part of the shock. So no extra room needed...
But untill I get a few spare hundreds quid it isn't happening

I have seen those too they look good

+1 on the air shocks, they are just a load leveller but will do what you want.

Hello Hotchef,

why not contact spring suppliers for their recommendations. I don't think that the addition of a winch actually adds a lot of weight to the springs.

the weight of the bumper and winch is in the region of 130kg and that is on the torsion bars no springs up front it does make a big difference
