Hi to all, I know this question has probably been asked a lot before on hear so sorry in advance! I am 26, have been working as a welder fabricator for 6 years after doing 2 years at collage doing NVQ & city & guilds in welding & fabrication. I use mainly Mig in work & just a bit of TIG & stick, all on lots of different jobs, but mainly in the workshop. I absolutely love welding & even though I have had ups and downs in my life (as have many people) and only did welding in collage coz couldn't think of anything else to do, I have really settled into it over last few years & am always trying to learn more & want to make a Career out of it rather than just a job. So my question is, how do I go about getting coded in TIG welding & then how do I go about getting a job with it! I know there are a lot of really experienced people on here & would be very greatfull for any advice anyone could give!

Although I am unable to answer your question I feel your pain.

I'm originally from South Africa where I received ASME IX coding for TIG. Have also done much work in MIG. Following this I went to University and my coding has since expired. I've been trying to find a facility where I could perhaps get my hand back in, but more importantly be recertified. The only place I've been able to find charges a ridiculous amount of money to do so.

If I do find anything I'll let you know.

Hi RJ_UK, welcome to the forum! What sort of work were you doing in south Africa? & what work would you like to do in the UK? What did you do at university? Sorry for all the questions.

I got my coding at the CEME Centre in Rainham, Not far from you, The coding exam costs about £100 plus about £20 for sending off the samples to Zurich Labs.

They have a great welding workshop there, best phone them up and ask to speak to someone from the welding department

they are pricey though, 100 quid a day for beginners, and more for codings i think

Hi Dave.

After getting coding for TIG I ended up MIG welding towers used for the provision of wireless internet services. Was the only steel worker at the business so it was solitary work.
Studied Geography & Environmental Management at Uni.

Looking for welding work in the UK.
