Would you need to be a coded welder to mig weld trailers?

If not, what type of welding requires coding?

It all depends on what the customer requires, what the relevant industry standards are and what the end service the component is going to be.

Are you making and/or repairing your own trailer? Or are you repairing a trailer for someone else? As a DIY project then no coding may be needed, but if it's for another person (paid) then if anything goes wrong and someone is harmed or third party damage is incurred which can be traced back to your poor welds then the **** will hit the fan! Even a DIY job might incur the same penalty.

The reason I ask is because a friend has purchased a new trailer, I had a look and noticed how poor the quality of welding was

The weld had quite a large amount of deep undercutting and poor weld to joint alignment!

I did offer to do some acid etching on the joints, but he wasn’t too keen on me chopping it up

Can’t really its not my trailer, my mate thinks I’m taking the P*** out of his trailer

Oh well ... If it comes apart on the motorway and spreads the contents over all 3 lanes, then it's his fault! Plus he'll be legally responsible for any damage to other vehicles and/or passengers in them.

If it's a new new one and not just new to him it'll be on the manufacturing company too.

probably find it was migged with a robot, probably just a few people dotted around the assbly line to give a quick visual check before the next process. If the weld fell within their criteria it moves on. Company i work for used to use abb welding robots for trailer axles (hgv) and some of the welds on them looked like the first snot to come from an apprentice that still hasn't worked out how to set the welder, but they still held up to an 180T load test

All our robot welds were checked by a welder/inspector and dodgy ones were ground out and re-welded, if there were 3 consecutive fails the robot tech was called to sort the problem. No company wants to pay for a worldwide car recall!.

my company didn't seem to care, they had over 6000 axles returned from one customer due to very bad alignment issues, all of them were twisted. it later came out that quality knew about it, and had been called out o check it and told them to carry on as they dint think the customer would notice. similarly, I machine parts that go together to make the auto adjustment system and the actuator system and if any of the machined parts are out of tolerance, and no one can think of a quick/permanent way to sort it out they simply alter the tolerances on the drawings and we work from that instead.

i wouldnt go round slagging company policy off on here or any other internet site u dont know whos watching so be verry carefull what u say or do a lot of these posts end up on google. i made a scrap cable stripper and last count had 18ooo people had viewed it

i can just see em getting his ip adress and takin it from there its not rocket science to find peoples adresses in newport south wales

He purchased it second hand, it only a year or two old

Its actually a professional built bike trailer, it seems quite sound but the welds are crappy looking

I noticed some welds undercut the metal by at least 1/3 the material thickness

ISO:9001 and other standards are there to prevent poor work getting out of the factories, it must have been the pallet of manuals blocking the Q.C. officers view of that weld as it went passed.

they are fully aware of their workers opinions if them. I would say its only the money keeping us there but they have just announced a 4 day week due to losing big customers due to poor quality
