Coatings on steel.

Hi Guys,
Ive got some 4 mm plate that I am using to make a wood burning stove, I want to paint the stove with heatproof paint. The destructions for the paint says to remove any coatings on the metal, the steel I have has a grey coating on it. I dont want to leave the surface full of scratches so using the flappy discs is out, can I use some sort of paint stripper or simmilar for removing the coating.
Any ideas as to what I should use on the coating would be very usefull.

What is the coating that's on the plate you want to use? How you get it off will depend on what it is. If it's mill-scale, you're stuck with grinding it off, as far as I know.

I use what looks like the same thing but I got them from screwfix. They are amazing at removing scale and rust. much quicker than a flap disc. And barely touches the steel. Watch for corners on the steel tho, they kill them quick.

Acetone is supposed to be good for cleaning up steel, i have some but havent tried it yet.
