coach bolts with partial thread question

im making up a list of some coach bolts i need for a job ,many online suppliers have partial thread

is there a rule of thumb that gives the percentage of thread /shank for a given overall length?

I'm sure there are rules for standard nuts & bolts, but not sure about coach bolts.

Coach screws are fully threaded, coach bolts are partially threaded Steve, yes there is a formula for how much thread a bolt has compared to size but I'm ******ed if I can remember it.

A Bolt is approx half thread - A setscrew is fully threaded

I admit I have started using the word 'set screw' to describe 'bolts'. By accident.

coach-screws are a different fastener altogether ,they are a self -tapper,like a wood -screw but are turned by wrench with a square or hex head & also have a pointed end,unlike a coach bolt which has a blunt end @ the threaded end & a
smooth domed head.A lot of suppliers call coach bolts cup square.

I'm talking about round head with a square below it, at Orbital fasteners in Watford they offer them in bolts or screws.

sure langy,thats a coach bolt don't know why some suppliers refer to them as cup squares though ,all the publications i've seen call them coach or carriage bolts.

I haven't got my Machinery's here,I'll lok up coach bolts later,to see if they're the same.

This is the table of thread lengths for Coach Bolts.There doesn't seem to be standards for the all threaded version in engineering terms.
Either version would be a bolt,determined by the fact it needs a nut to apply torque.
A Coach Screw,the tapered thread type with hex or square head,can apply torque on it's own.
