Hi folks, I'm new to this forum and do various bits and bobs of welding, mainly in relation to vehicles and vehicle related projects.
At one time of day I used to rent one of the large Argon/CO2 mix cylinders from Energas when I used to use my welder a lot but I got rid of it a couple of years ago when I didn't have so much use for it. Since then I have been using the small disposable bottles but they don't last that long and aren't exactly cheap. Now my welding activites are picking up a little so I really need to do something about the gas situation.
Anyway I have got my hands on a newish CO2 fire extinguisher that looks in fine form and has a seal on it too. I'm sure that I have read on here that some people use these as their source of gas for their welder and wondered if someone could give me some advice on whether this is right or wrong and how I go about it.
As far as I can see the fire extinguisher has the same threaded outlet on it as a pub gas cylinder and I guess that I will need an adapter so that I can use my Argon/CO2 mix regulator. Where can I get one of these adapters at a reasonable cost? Other than that I reckon it will be good to go although I will have to squeeze the extinguishers handles together (with a cable tie or something) to extract the gas and I have read something on here about dip tubes too. So will I have to tip the extinguisher upside down?
Any more thoughts or advice on this subject? Am I missing something glaringly obvious?
Thanks in advance...
