Clothes Dye Remover

I've a karate gi here I bought over 20 years ago in NZ. A top quality, canvas type. Cut differently to what you could get here back then.

I came back one day (again years ago) and threw it in the washing machine with a pair of yellow hand wraps. The gi went a nice shade of lemon!

Tried everything back then, mild bleach, dye remover, Vanish. I don't want anything to strong in case it affects the stitching.

Mid life crisis or just a recognition I'm getting older and losing flexibility but I went back to my old club last night. Not to train but just to get the feel for it again. Think I'm going to go back.

Any clever ideas ref getting this gi back whiter than white?

Lemon yellow, is the height of fashion !

If bleach didn't work, no idea what would.

Quick google suggests vinegar.

I recall the older instructors' gis were a bit yellow. At the time I thought that was a mark of long-term use and experience.
Of course, they might have washed them with the socks.

Soak in vanish or another oxygen based bleach, warm water for hours, then wash again.
Chlorine bleach/hypochlorite is more likely to damage it Id think.

Would hydrogen peroxide be safe? I’m not sure what strength you need for bleaching though, I just use 3% for general household use.

Good on you by the way, I keep meaning to go back to the boxing gym after a year out. I used to do karate when I was young (i.e. still at school!). I got up to purple belt, only had brown to go before black IIRC.

Got as far last night as trying on the various gis. I struggled tbh to see which was the "lemon" one under the artificial light. Didn't look as bad as I remembered...

I'll look later in good daylight.

I had blue, brown, black to go when I stopped. This style is Wado-Ryu. Has a lot of holds, joint locks, even throws in it. Plus boxing techniques like upper cuts.

As I say I'm just wanting a bit of exercise and regain some flexibility. Be nice to be able to reach round and tuck my shirt in without wincing.

I’m sure you’ll do it, it sounds like you’ve motivated yourself!

I’m not actually familiar with the different styles, I seem to remember we did a lot of striking and not much holding and grappling though.

The guys at work use to bug me a bit about how flexible I was I told them it was so I can walk normal when I get older.

Bicarbonate of soda is supposed to be good for this, can't speak from experience apart from soaking things to remove cooking gunk, carbon, etc.

Did do a washing load with a cup full instead of washing capsules as we had run out and got good results.
It's cheaper if you buy it as a cleaning product not cooking baking soda.

The handy thing about a yellow gi, is that with advancing age, a slight leakage stain will not be noticed.

Wrong time of year obviously, but sunlight is great for bleaching (and for getting curry stains out ). Just hang it on the washing line outside.

(Before chemical bleaches, fabric used to be bleached in bleachfields.)

Second lesson under my belt so to speak. No particular aches or pains, quite the opposite in fact. The stiffening, aching, right arm, shoulder that started a short while ago has much improved. Freeing up old, unused bits I guess, which was the aim.

A few "you've done this before comments". Shocking how quick some of the youngsters are.
