Cleaning welds afterwards - suggestions please.

Hello
At the moment i'm welding mainly stainless to stainless and the heat marks made by the process need to be removed. What product would be best for this?

Also, welding some small steel engine parts but the welds are left sooty. I have sweated oil from the parts to be welded but i'm guessing this is not enough. Anything else i could try?

For the stainless the cheapest option would be a wire brush. If you don't want to scratch the surfaces then you should use pickle paste. Or if money isn't an object electro polishing.

Pickling paste is the best way to ensure its done properly and fully deoxidised. Nothing worse than rusty stainless. Then polish to suit the finish you want. Take special care with pickling paste. Full ppe at all times its evil stuff to stainless and worse to your person.

Yes very nasty stuff, nitric / hydrofluoric acid. remember hearing a welder near melted his crown jewels off after getting some on his glove and went for a pee round the back of the workshop and never took his glove off..
