Does anyone know how to clean ali chequer plate? After a year out in the weather it's all gone dull (as expexted), and there are spots of rust staining on some of it.
Presumably this is on your Landy ? If so it's road salt that will have oxidised the surface of the alloy. No easy way to restore that ! There are acid based cleaners and mechanical methods, the choice is yours. Or you could replace it with stainless steel chequer plate
I used a pressure washer with a whirly attachment that directs a thin jet of water in a rotating circle. Cleaned up some chequer plate alright on my landy, it's still a bit dull, but it's an even dullness.
As Tigler choice is mechanical/elbow grease or chemical. Unless we're talking about a couple of small bits i can't think of many things more soul destroying than autosol (or similar) by hand for chequer plate personally. I'd rather have a mask up and attack with power tools if it has to be shiney and is too far gone for the mild chemical cleaners
A few of the chemical suspects... aliclean or something like this
Once you've got it satin/shiney whatever you want seal it (autoglym extra gloss protection, jetseal 109 etc) or wax it and it be easier to stay on top of
Yes, it is the landy, the load bed is chequer. I work near a scrap metal yard, and metal particles fall on the cars in the car park, then go rusty. It'll wash off the paintwork, but it stains the ally.
I can tolerate the dulling, but the little orange spots are ugly. Agaist my own better judgement, I tried fine scotchbrite, it was a mistake, and we'll leave that one there.
I'm currently lacking the will power to clean it by hand, so I think I might give one of the chemical cleaners a try, or just replace it as it's only screwed in place. If my numbers come up I'll replace it with stainless!
