Classic Car Manifold Repair

I have an exhaust manifold of a really old car a ford Model Y. The outlet at the end of the manifold where the exhaust connects has sheared off. I have cleaned it to bare metal and just trying to work out the best way to fix it. I have MIG, TIG and Braze available to me.

Suggestions?

I had the manifold for my 34 Wolseley repaired ( mounting lugs broken off) whilst I was still working. Apparently they put the manifold in a forge got it red hot & made good the lugs with Arc using cast iron rods. The whole thing was then covered in dry casting sand & left to cool down slowly. As repaired the welds were pretty rough & I had to have the face of the manifold restored by milling. Another testament to the power of the Govvy job. It ost me a bottle of malt but well worth the price.

Last manifold job I did was done this way.
Clean up the area and cut a V section into the repair area.
Warm up the casting, until spit boils on it.
Then I used Gas to run a brazed joint into it.
Then I covered it in dry play sand pit sand until it had cooled.
Cleaned up the joint and it was still working years later.

Many years ago, a friend altered a cast manifold by cutting & brazing, it was ok for a while & then fell apart. It looked as though the braze had melted, so I would avoid that if I were you.

EDIT Just seen post above, maybe my mate was unlucky, or are there different melting temperatures of braze.

I've had exhaust manifolds brazed with no problems.

Are you in a position to stick weld it?
If you are, get decent rods, keep it cool enough to keep your hand on and lightly peen it and you won't go wrong.

I brazed it in the end and cooled it in the BBQ!

TIG brazing works very well for cast iron repairs..............

I have success with pure nickel stick weld, preheat to 300/400 Deg C, cool off overnight in sand. Don't do more than an inch at a time and leave it to settle back to the preheat temperature between short runs.

There's a part inside my wood stove welded like that, cycled hot and cold ad infinitum, and still fine.

Worked out quite well in the end. Hopefully the pre heat and cool down have done there job. Although this is a really low powered old Ford engine, the manifold is tiny. My lawn mower has more power.

It was not a flow braze as there were numerous gaps from where it has broken. So I brazed to fill the gaps as well.

Tig brazing is perfect for that type of job, and never found a need to pre-heat or cool carefully either. Repaired lots of cast that way, manifolds the most common though, and takes far less time than most other methods.
