Clarkes new 8" bench grinder

Hi all I bought myself the heavy duty Clarke 8" bench grinder today and what a machine really powerful and really smooth and quite running.

But I have noticed if its left plugged in and turned on at the wall socket even though the machine is not running the motor stays warm does anyone know if this is normal for one of these style motors/grinders

id thought not normal if its not turned on at the front switch there should be no power to the motor windings ?

I have the same grinder, it does not get warm after switching off front switch.

Time to exchange it I think before it burns the workshop down..

It's a big lump of metal and will stay warm for hours after use. Does it warm up plugged in if you don't use it that would be a problem?

Your totally right it holds heat for a long time I left it plugged in and it was cold so has to be like you say and holds the heat I just didn't know if this is normal but it is a big electric motor and is going to get hot just surprised at how hot it gets and how long it stays hot for.

even a lot of the older ones arent vented or the new ones. there bound to get warm and retain it

I didn't know that.I wonder why that is? From a hair dryer to angle grinder or stick welder do that I own

There doesn't appear to be any vented/cooling areas and after thinking about it, it does make sense retaining the heat as it is a big motor but I can tell you that the quality of it is great very heavy and so smooth I got it with a vat free voucher as well which was a bonus also must mean there starting to do the vouchers again because its the first one I've had since before covid

I've checked the manual, I don't think it should be used for that long. "Duty Cycle classification S2/30 minutes" I'm not sure exactly what the on time should be but its a short run time with a total duty cycle time of 30 minutes, so maybe run for 5-10 mins on, then cool for 20-25 mins, but I'm not certain.

the majority of grinding operations are done in a few minutes unless you are carving off a load of metal shaping things and cutting metal back , i use a bigish old grinder for that and a smaller bench one for touching up drills and tools

I use this Draper 8 inch grinder regular. It's on a stand. I use the wire wheel alot for derusting steel & tools etc. Very fast and effective wouldn't be without it now.
