clarke welder 85en

i have a clarke weld 85 en mig welder which starts to weld without having to press the trigger on the gun.i'v checked it with a meter and the tips is live all the time but cant see anywhere its has shorted . what could cause this and how do i put it right please help thank you

I would start by having a look inside the handle of the torch where the trigger is in case the wires are shorting out in the switch. There's a picture of the inside of a torch in post #4 of the following thread so you know what to expect when you open it up...

thanks garym71 the in side of my handle dose not look the same it only has two wires going in to it one to the trigger and a thicker one on the bottom of the brass bit.

OK, bear in mind that I've never opened a torch up on one of these before but the workings inside shouldn't be rocket science. There must be something that makes a connection from the trigger to the brass block so that when the trigger is squeezed, a complete circuit is made and the tip of the torch then becomes live.

If you are able to post up a picture then it would be easier to try and understand the physical setup inside your torch.
