Clarke Stove Help Please

A VAT free MM day looming means I am going to prepare for winter and buy a Clarke pot belly..the £74 one.

My question relates to the flue, if I buy the bits from MM it will cost more than the stove, so my plan is to get some mild steel pipe from the scrappy or even my local steel stockist and cut/weld it to shape myself....basically 2 ups with a short 45 degree in the middle.

Knowing nothing about the stoves...will this be ok if the pipe is a bit of decent thickness, thinking of sealing it over the stove outlet with some of the correct stove paste/cement.

If anyone from Carlisle way has not got the vat free voucher and needs anything, I will be there on Sunday 15th May and can get it on my voucher for you if you want.

Do you ever holiday in France? DIY stores like Mr Brickolage do galvanised flue pipe for a few euros a metre. That paid for my last holiday.

Going to Majorca next week but wife would kill me if I loaded her bag with pipe and she could not get her cheapie perfume in.

Wonder why it's so much cheaper in France though?

Its just to avoid welding in -7 degrees as I was doing last winter, I had a small elec fan heater going and that worked not too bad but caused condensation on everything metal.

my workshop is 8 metres x 5 metres and thought it would be enough to take the chill out.

I approached the guys at the tip about some gas bottles that were there, they really wouldn't let me have any, regulations you see, even when i mentioned a fiver.

In the end i bought some 47kg bottles off ebay for £5 each.

For a flue, I talked nicely to some guys redoing the car park at the train station and they let me have an old lamp-post, its about 5m long, 3mm wall thickness and about 15cm diameter, perfect for flues for gas bottle burners, they even cut it up and delivered it for £20.

Yes I found out about the tip regs today, even a crisp fiver waved under their nose did not do the trick.

i made my stove from 4mm plate, its 10" wide x 12" deep and 16" tall, it must put out about 5 - 7 kw when loaded up, if you google tent stoves or workshop stove then you will get plenty of ideas, get yourself a stove kettle and your away, brew on whenever you fancy.

i got some 3mm thick 4" pipe from my supplier for just over a tenner a meter, being thick it holds the heat well and will last forever.

I'd make one yourself, it's harder to make a decent stove out of a gas bottle than it is to make one from scratch. Those tiny pot-bellies are too small for your shop too I reckon, and have the drawback that you need to cut the wood into tiny chunks to fit through the door, which is a pain, and then you have to keep refilling them or they go out...due to the tiny lumps of wood. You can use steel tubing from your steel supplier incidentally, depending where you are fitting it and how long you expect it to last, I reckon if you weld it, it's better than using vitreous sections, the joints are always sloppy and need filling.
