I saw Richards lovely example and my neighbour has leant me his hobby lathe for a month - I now want one. You've just got to wait till a gem comes up on the bay or spend a grand on a nice one from a dealer.

id probably pay over the odds for a decent example. It's still a far better product than the same money on a new shiny one. And eventually they'll all be gone.

one issue with the variable speed motors is that as they run at slow speed you wont get the torque you do with a multiple geared or belt drive speed reduction. as the diameter of work goes up they depth of cut you can take without stalling the lathe will go down.

the main part is missing on that myford the lathe chuck itself although it will set you back 40-200 for another

best thing to check on that is cogs and pulleys under the hood of the machine

motor is replaceable

@roofman has one as a back up for the back up for the back up, or at least one very similar buried at the back of the bench

Thats correct Dan and iff ime honest they make very good lathes, but you need to strip them and rebuild again with a small bit of fine Emery cloth and some decent machine oil..also the Gib screws need adjusting correctly but once set up right they make very accurate and reliable cuts

You need to strip and rebuild that texting thumb while you're at it, it appears to have stopped working

i have a clarke cl300. got it off ebay, just wanted something for little odd jobs that won't cost much and take up loads of room as only have a single garage with loads of stuff. for my needs its fine and gets things done. ive rebuilt it and adjusted everything, new brass saddle plates and added a carriage lock, there are lots of info on Google for Chinese mini lathes. it's marked as a clarke but under that paint its red, its a seig c3, lots of parts etc available from arc euro trade or amadeal
