clarke 170t mig welder

hi all.

does anybody know what voltage should come out of the transformer.
i have 230v going in but not sure what comes out.
i have this problem where the mains are fine and the cooling fan works but the feed wire does not work.
i have taken out the pcb and will try to test what voltage there is.
the motor works when connected to dc voltage. but when connected to pcb nothing.
please can any one help..

Hi,

sorry I don't know the voltage but I think the motor is fed from a relay. Possibly the relay isn't operating, maybe a diode or transistor in the feed path, burnt-out resistor, etc, or it could simply be dirty switching contacts.

I've never touched a Clarke welder but, as most MIGs are built along similar lines, I'll hazard a guess.

The voltage coming out of the transformer will be somewhere in the range of 15-30 volts AC, depending on the position of the power switch on the front panel. I'd be amazed if this is anything to do with the machine's failure, though. It's far more likely that the PCB has failed. This can stop main HT output to the torch and/or any wire feed.

Do you get a spark or some sign of energy if you touch the torch (wire) to test metal, even if the wire is static? If so, that part of the machine which controls the main output is OK. If not, consider shorting out the main relay terminals (I assume it has a main relay) and try again. If both these tests fail, check the rectifier.

As for wire feed, it could be a blown fuse, loose terminal or something simple. Or it could be blown component(s) on the PCB.

hi all many thanks for your replys.

no i dont have any sparks from torch.
there is a contactor inside that when i pull the trigger it works fine.
tested across terminals and they to are fine.
now i know what roughly should come out of transformer will test that too.
there are two finder type 40.51 relays on pcb and they are 230v to 24v dcboth look like they work but not sure if contacts are making as they are sealed.
would they be worth changing ?.
